So I had my induction session onto my course today. I met with the other new PhD students- one of which turned out to have been in the same year doing Maths with me at Oxford but who I seem to have never run into before. A very mixed bunch in general, mostly maths graduates but a couple of biologists and physicists in our group. Most of them seemed friendly enough, although I can't say I've really had enough time to judge. We were given a talk about the course and a lot of boring stuff about fire safety. I did find myself rather amused in general as the program coordinator ushered us in to have our photos taken- a process much akin to herding cats. We had a tour of the campus and then got given a list of undergraduate modules that it might be useful to sit in order to supplement the lectures being given by the department. Fortunately none of these are examined on and we're not expected to bother going to any of the practicals. My timetable looks largely okay- about 10 lectures in total a week, with none of them starting before 10am. Tomorrow is an IT induction at 11, followed by the rest of the day free. Methinks I will have to update with something more interesting and informative later in the week.
In general I shall be in Oxford this weekend, although not LARPing due to having my graduation. I'll probably pop down during the week as well to see the-teflon-monk on account of albion not having started yet and not yet having an excuse to come down to Oxford during the week. Thereafter I'm intending to be about regularly on Tuesday nights and at weekends for LARP/ Exalted.
The still unnamed London flat seems to be fine, with as you can tell fully operational internets.
Edit: Also seemed to get dragged into attending a seminar on digital imaging of fish embryos. I'm sure it would have been interesting if I'd understood any of it. It did make me want to eat tasty fish, though.
