Vicky's Continuing Adventures in Plymouth [Jul. 14th, 2011|10:33 am]

I seem to be coming down with a cold.  Either that or a bad bout of hayfever.  I stayed up late trying to correct a stupid mistake in my code.  I finally found the mistake and it is a really stupid typing error but in order to fix it I'll have to re-run loads of stuff.  I hate plymouth.

Exciting adventures in Plymouth [Jul. 12th, 2011|10:18 pm]

So in continuation of said exciting adventures I have two thrilling pieces to report.  The first is that since last night the shower in the room upstairs has been leaking.  Mercifully it has not leaked through to my shower as yet.  The second is waiting over an hour to get served in the restaurant this evening.  Kind of felt bad for the waitress as she was the only member of staff and clearly rushed off her feet whilst having to bear the brunt of the customer's discontent.  Still that's a place I won't be revisiting.

Stuck in Plymouth again till Thursday.  Presenting a poster today and then dinner/ boat trip this evening.  I tried marmite for the first time ever at breakfast this morning and given I struggled to stop myself gagging I'm pretty sure that was a hate reaction.

Undergraduates are useless [Dec. 4th, 2009|11:46 am]

[mood |mischievousmischievous]

Invigilating one of the course assessments for first year business students this morning, a few things struck me:

1. Why is there always some bastard that comes in fifteen minutes late, after you've already got everyone else settled in and started?

2. Why do they always keep writing after you've explictly told them to stop?

3. Why do they always wait till I've started to collect the papers in before writing their names on them, even after me telling them to do so twice?

Clearly university would be much more efficient without all these bloody undergraduates.

Flat Hunting [May. 21st, 2008|01:14 pm]

Primarily to the London crowd. Those of you who read the_teflon_monks LJ will be aware that he has just be offered a job at UCL, starting in October. As such I will be looking for a flat with him somewhere in London. I'd be interested to know where people would recommend I start looking. We're after a 1 or 2 bedroom place, with a study if we can in the case of 1 bedroom. The_teflon_monk would prefer somewhere in North London, for easy commuting but we're willing to look elsewhere if there are good transport links. My preference would be for zone 1 or 2, although the niceness of the area my outweigh extra commuting distance. So where is nice to live in London, then?

CoMPLEX Field trip of fun: Day 4 [May. 9th, 2008|12:49 am]

Wow am sooooo drunk right now...

still seafood restaurant was amazing and the entire day of multivariate statistics was surprisingly enjoyable.

Yesterday I went on a field trip to Wembury (couting hermit crabs) and managed to wear my purple stripy top.  I covered everthing in suncream except for the gap my top has in the back and now have a perfectly oval shape sunburnt in to it.

Obligatory First Day Post [Sep. 24th, 2007|10:13 pm]

[mood |accomplishedaccomplished]

So I had my induction session onto my course today.  I met with the other new PhD students- one of which turned out to have been in the same year doing Maths with me at Oxford but who I seem to have never run into before.  A very mixed bunch in general, mostly maths graduates but a couple of biologists and physicists in our group.  Most of them seemed friendly enough, although I can't say I've really had enough time to judge.  We were given a talk about the course and a lot of boring stuff about fire safety.  I did find myself rather amused in general as the program coordinator ushered us in to have our photos taken- a process much akin to herding cats.  We had a tour of the campus and then got given a list of undergraduate modules that it might be useful to sit in order to supplement the lectures being given by the department.  Fortunately none of these are examined on and we're not expected to bother going to any of the practicals.  My timetable looks largely okay- about 10 lectures in total a week, with none of them starting before 10am.  Tomorrow is an IT induction at 11, followed by the rest of the day free.  Methinks I will have to update with something more interesting and informative later in the week.

In general I shall be in Oxford this weekend, although not LARPing due to having my graduation.  I'll probably pop down during the week as well to see the-teflon-monk on account of albion not having started yet and not yet having an excuse to come down to Oxford during the week.  Thereafter I'm intending to be about regularly on Tuesday nights and at weekends for LARP/ Exalted.

The still unnamed London flat seems to be fine, with as you can tell fully operational internets.

Edit:  Also seemed to get dragged into attending a seminar on digital imaging of fish embryos.  I'm sure it would have been interesting if I'd understood any of it.  It did make me want to eat tasty fish, though.

Good news is from the looks of outside the floodwater is very slowly beginning to recede.  Bad news is the rain is doing its very utmost to combat the situation.
